The initial symptoms of lead poisoning include flu-like symptoms that lead to fatigue, headaches, irritability, abdominal pain and skin problems. Your doctor is most likely correct to diagnose lead poisoning due to the similarity of the symptoms to the flu. Chronic lead poisoning can also cause hearing loss and kidney damage.
